Document-Based Proof of Address

Verify address documents, extract structured address data, and run checks for identity consistency and compliance.

Introduction

Use Document-Based Proof of Address to confirm an applicant’s residential or business address from supported documents such as utility bills, bank statements, tax documents, and lease agreements.

IDWise extracts address data, parses it into structured components, and runs verification checks to confirm that the document is valid, current, and consistent with the applicant’s identity and journey details.

Information Extraction

IDWise extracts the following data from Proof of Address (POA) documents when the information is present and supported by the document type.

Data attributeDescription
Full NameName or names listed on the POA document. If multiple names are present, IDWise can extract all listed names.
Issue DateDate the document was issued. This is used to determine whether the document is current.
AddressResidential or business address. To be considered valid, the address must include at least the city or street and the country.
Additional Data FieldsDocument-specific fields. For example, insurance documents may include an insurance policy number.

Address Parsing

The extracted address is automatically broken down into granular components for easier validation and comparison.

ComponentDescription
Apartment NumberThe flat or apartment number, if present.
Building NameThe building, tower, or complex name.
Building NumberThe building number in the street or block.
Street NameThe street or road name.
SuburbThe neighborhood or locality name.
CityThe city or municipality.
DistrictThe district or region subdivision.
Postal CodeThe postal or ZIP code.
StateThe state or province.
CountryThe country of residence.

Transliteration of Non-Latin Text

If the name or address fields appear in non-Latin scripts, such as Arabic, Cyrillic, Urdu, or Chinese, IDWise can transliterate the text into standardized Latin characters.

Both versions are returned:

  • Latin fieldsFull Name, Address
  • Native fieldsFull Name Native, Address Native

This gives you the original native-script values for display while using Latin-script values for AML screening, address matching, and compliance checks.

Business Registration and Tax Identifiers

In addition to standard Proof of Address fields, IDWise conditionally extracts business-related identifiers from POA documents issued to companies, freelancers, or registered entities. These fields provide regulatory and registration context and are returned only when relevant to the detected document type and subtype.

Checks Performed

IDWise runs several checks to validate the address information and determine whether the POA document belongs to the applicant. These checks help detect fraud, confirm consistency across submitted data, and support compliance requirements.

1. Cross-Matching POA with POI

This check compares the full name or names on the Proof of Address with the full name extracted from the Proof of Identity (POI) document. It confirms that the address document belongs to the same person who submitted the identity document.

2. Cross-Matching POA with Applicant Details

This check validates that the personal details provided at the start of the journey match the values extracted from the Proof of Address document. It helps confirm that the POA belongs to the same applicant and not to another individual.

SettingDescription
Full Name MatchingCompares the applicant’s full name with the name or names on the POA. Non-Latin names are automatically transliterated to Latin before matching.
Similarity Threshold (50–100)Controls match strictness. Typical value: 80.
Address MatchingCompares address components, such as building name, street, city, and postal code. Each field can be enabled or disabled individually.
Enable Fuzzy ContainsAllows partial text matches when comparing fields. For example, A7 can match Flat A7 if it meets the similarity threshold.

3. Outdated POA Check

This check verifies whether the Proof of Address document is current and valid. Documents that are outdated or expired can be flagged based on your configured acceptance rules.

4. Location Checks

This check compares the geolocation of the applicant’s IP address at the time of submission with the geolocation of the extracted POA address. It helps validate consistency between the applicant’s digital submission location and the address on the document.

5. Mandatory Information Check

This check confirms that all required information was extracted from the POA document. Mandatory fields include Full Name, Issue Date, and Address. If any of these fields are missing, the check is flagged.
